Art Portfolio: “Western Influence”

--

By Tehseen Khan

Artist’s Statement: Being an Eastern girl living in an Islamic country and coming from a middle-class family-where people think of western influences as taboo- is the topic of my work. The topic has been a challenging one to communicate to my family, reasoning that wearing western clothes does not make a person inherently like them. I mix and match western and eastern clothes, as many do now. The crux of my work is communicating that influences from other cultures do not result in forgetting your own. The only thing one needs to remember is to never lose the taste of the culture that one embodies, and that diverse influences do not directly result in a loss of that, but rather, an expansion.
